CHAPTER

SEVENTEEN

The location of Silver Dragon Mountain was a secret known only to the metallic dragons. It stood in the Last Gaard range in Ergoth, shrouded by thick mists that rose from the boiling hot springs of Foghaven Vale below.

Dragon lore held that Paladine had brought forth metallic dragons at the beginning of time, lovingly crafting them from the streams of rare dragonmetal that flowed beneath the mountain. The god had created gold, silver, brass, bronze, and copper dragons and blessed them as they emerged gleaming from the shining pools of dragonmetal to walk the world and bring forth others of their kind.

All dragons make pilgrimages to Silver Dragon Mountain during their lifetimes. Gwyneth had flown there as a young hatchling in company with her sister, Silvara, and she knew how to find the mountain that was otherwise hidden in the mists.

She had left the High Clerist’s Tower the previous day, having escaped from her prison cell with ease. She had opened the cell door with a touch of her hand, then cast a spell on the jailer and locked the slumbering man in her cell.

She had then hidden inside the deserted temple until Solinari had set, then, still in her elven form, she had slipped through the eastern gate and climbed up into the foothills. She had to make certain that Immolatus did not see her shift into her dragon form. She had chosen this time, well after midnight, because he hunted at night and she knew he would be asleep in his lair after gorging himself.

She found a wide patch of ground and lifted her head to the stars and let go of the magic that made her appear to be an elven woman. She spread her arms and they transformed into wings. She burst free from the weak and fragile mortal body and emerged in her dragon form, twenty-two feet in length, strong and powerful, sleek and graceful, covered by scales that shone silver in the lambent light of the stars.

Gwyneth could not take the time to revel in returning to her true form, for she was surrounded by danger. She listened intently and sniffed the air but heard only the sounds of the night animals going about their business. Lifting her wings, she took to the sky.

The flight to Silver Dragon Mountain was long, but she had a lot to think about, a lot to consider, to keep her occupied on the journey.

Gwyneth had been glad when the commander had ordered her to be locked up in a prison cell far below ground. She had been glad to be away from the man whose strong hands had been so gentle, whose eyes had been kind and filled with compassion when he had helped what he had thought was a white stag.

She had been glad to escape the man she had seen in the dream. When dragons dreamed, their spirits roamed the stars as they had before they were born. They were free, unfettered by flesh and bone. They could commune with the god who had created them: the Dragon Father, Paladine.
